MEDIA REVIEWS

I’m glad Meze learned what transient response is and why it’s so crucial, I’m glad we got a much wider frequency response that pushed small nuances to the surface, ultimately winning me over with their excellent imaging and natural soundstage.

I think it has a very good value and it’s in my opinion one of the best headphones you can get at this time. If you ever look out for a life-like, vibrant, musical, resolving and dynamic headphone under $1000, I strongly recommend it.

The new Meze 109 Pro open-back headphones are a triumph, in every respect. The sound quality is pitch-perfect. The openness of the soundstage and the sheer level of detail is astonishing. Listening to music with these unique headphones will have you falling in love with your favorite albums all over again.

Though I expect the best from Meze, I’m nonetheless blown away with what they accomplished with the 109 PRO. Meze continues to set their own quality standards by instead focusing on overall balance and tasteful brightness, which I find harder to pull off and all-the-more impressive.

Sounds good, looks fair, headband rings

To start out, these headphones are really comfortable. One can wear them for a long period of time without effort.

When examined closely the construction is good, however on first glance the materials seem lower quality than one would expect from a headphone at this price. Wood-grained plastic does nothing to improve the appearance.

One immediate problem is the high-Q resonance of the headband itself. Tap the headband and you hear a sustained "ding" at around 190Hz, with the second harmonic being very prominent. Needless to say this does not imply proper damping of the materials.

Now for the real reason we wear headphone: sound quality. On all my favorite program material the headphone works well. I don't hear anything bad happening. I tested for harmonic distortion at low frequencies and did not detect anything obvious at levels above what I would usually tolerate. Mid range is balanced and smooth making female vocals attractive. The "sizzle" frequencies, e.g. sibilance and brushed cymbals, are equally smooth. One should be able to listen to these for extended periods without fatigue.

So I would rate this to be a good, but not stellar, headphone. Please note that I tend to use a 3-star rating to indicate that this performs as it is supposed to and does adequately well. Maybe others would rate it 4 or 5 stars for that.

An upgrade without contest

I upgraded from my 99s and I couldn't be happier with the results. It's hard to describe but the 109 cancels out surrounding noise whilst listening but they are not, by nature at least, noise canceling in design. Lost in sound is an appropriate description when it comes to defining how these work. The comfortability is a plus as well, especially since I wear glasses and always run in to pain with prolonged headphone use which I no longer encounter.
